12th Continentals of 1775


Varnum's Regiment (12th Continentals) July - December 1775

Organized in May 1775 with men from Kings and Kent Counties; originally contained eight musket companies plus the regimental commander and staff; upped to ten musket companies in June. Each company authorized sixty officers and men; total for regiment 610. In July ordered to Jamaica Plains where on arrival the regiment was taken into Congressional service and pay. Regiment assigned to Nathanael Greene's brigade. Men had enlisted until 31 December 1775, at which time the unit was disbanded, although many officers and men volunteered for the new 9th Continentals.
